Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Gradually add the hot water or coffee to the batter, mixing until smooth. The batter will be thin.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Frost as desired.

Tips & Notes

Using hot coffee instead of hot water will enhance the chocolate flavor. Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for best results.
